** 2011 WPFG Situation Report as of 0100 hours 8/27 **

All sporting competitions have been suspended at this time. Registration & Accreditation will remain open on Saturday, 8/27 from 0700-1100 hours. Captain and Team Meetings scheduled to take place prior to 1200 will be held as scheduled. All activities on Sunday 8/28 are suspended.

Our fist priority is to ensure the safety of all Athletes and their Families. It is important to realize that even if Hurricane Irene does not directly hit New York City, this is still a serious and potentially life threatening storm. Please pay attention to the warnings issued by the City and follow recommendations to ensure your safety.

As a reminder the NYC Transit System will begin a full shut down as of 1200 hours. Please ensure that you have made arrangements to get to your final destination and be prepared to shelter in place during the storm. There is a possibility of power outages throughout the City and resources will certainly be taxed.

New York City's Hurricane Guide can be found on NYC's Office of Emergency Managements website. Copies of the guide are available in many languages. NYC's Hurricane Guide

New York is lucky to have over 17,000 First Responders in town to lend a hand if necessary. We have received numerous offers of assistance from our Athletes who will be staying in town during the storm. It is possible that we will be asking for individuals to help in staffing some of the City's 65 Evacuation Shelters.

For Sports Information:

The 2011 WPFG Organizing Committee is closely monitoring Hurricane Irene and its possible impact on New York City. We intend to begin sport competitions as quickly as possible following the storm with consideration and the utmost regard for safety. Information as to specific sport tournaments will be made available as it is determined. We will not have definitive answers until we assess the damage from the storm. At this time, this information will be distributed electronically via the website and our facebook page. How we proceed with each sport will be based on the impact of the storm on venues and transportation. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we deal with these most uncertain conditions.

As First Responders I am sure that you will agree that safety will always be the priority.

Thank you.

2011 Benefit Gala

This year’s Benefit Gala for the 2011 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) was a huge success! More than 630 people attended the event which was held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. It was the sixth, and final, Gala event leading up to the 2011 WPFG. The Organizing Committee of the 2011 WPFG would like to thank all of those people who supported this year’s Gala. Special thanks go out to this year’s Gala Committee (see below) who put in many hours of hard work planning for this great event. Those in attendance were treated to a wonderful program.

The reception area featured exhibits from some of our partners, including a diverse number of silent auction items. SnapSports and SportPros provided a basketball free throw area for guests to test their skills on. Bronx Toys brought supersized displays of the 2011 WPFG mascots, Siren and PAL, which provided a great backdrop for photos. Fine Designs, the official merchandiser for the 2011 WPFG, had a wide variety of 2011 WPFG clothing available for attendees. Steiner Sports brought their usual array of sports memorabilia for the silent auction. The Tall Outstanding Women, a charitable organization made up of extraordinary women who stand 6’1” or taller, provided an added attraction as they sold 50/50 raffles.

Sukanya Krishnan and Lisa Mateo from the WPIX Morning News were co-hosts for the evening, and a special thanks to them for doing such a great job throughout the night. The NYPD & FDNY Pipes and Drums led the PAPD Honor Guard to present the colors at the opening of the program. Reigning Heart Records recording artist, Sariah, was on hand to sing the National Anthem. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, this year’s Gala Chair, made an appearance to say a few words on behalf of the 2011 WPFG.

At the end of the dinner portion of the evening, FDNY Firefighter and founder of the I WILL Foundation, Matt Long, gave a motivational speech talking about his comeback and plans to compete once again in the 2011 WPFG. His perseverance was an inspiration to everyone in the audience. Radio personality Ken Dashow, from Q-104.3, conducted the live auction. The live auction was an overwhelming success thanks to Ken’s presence and persistence.

Throughout the night presentations were made to our honorees for this year. Joe Brosi, CEO of the 2011 WPFG, presented Tara Chiarell of Allison & Partners with the Community Service Award for their work providing public relations support to the 2011 WPFG. Virginia Mewborn, VP of the 2011 WPFG, presented Kam Wong of the Municipal Credit Union with the Outstanding Corporate Service Award for their commitment to the 2011 WPFG. Port Authority Police Superintendent Michael Fedorko presented Dan Wollman of SnapSports and Tom Petersen of SportPros with the Gratitude Award for their help in providing flooring for the sports at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Jim Carney, President of the 2011 WPFG, presented Gerald McQueen of the Jacob Javits Convention Center with the Outstanding Corporate Service Award for his support in securing the Jacob Javits Convention Center as the focal point of the 2011 WPFG. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly presented Bill Long of Bronx Toys with the Outstanding Corporate Support Award for having developed the mascots for the 2011 WPFG, PAL and Siren. FDNY Chief of Department Ed Kilduff presented Mark Sanchez, quarterback of the NY Jets, with the Outstanding Athlete Award for his outstanding accomplishments both on and off the football field. Ed Schauder, Corporate Counsel for the 2011 WPFG, presented Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, with the Community Service Award for supporting police officers and firefighters. John Flaherty of the YES Network and former NY Yankee, who was unable to attend the Gala, was acknowledged for receiving the Gratitude Award for his role with the 2011 WPFG as host of the previous three Gala events. Thanks to all of our honorees for their ongoing support of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games.

There are only five months to the opening of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games. We would like to thank everyone for attending our 2011 Benefit Gala. It is only with your support that these Games will succeed. We look forward to seeing everyone in August!

April 2011

The 2007 World Police & Fire Games held in Adelaide Australia was the twelfth running of the Games and a tremendous success. It was also the first time in which three actively retired FDNY members teamed up to participate in the three on three Basketball event. Retired Lieutenant Ed McCaffery, Retired Firefighter Louie Cacchioli and Retired Firefighter James Carney joined together to have a good time and to prove they could still compete. All three are actively involved in helping to produce the 2011 Games in New York. Ed has volunteered his time to help, while Louie retains the title of Director of International Affairs, and Jim Carney can proudly call himself the President of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games. They have proven their dedication and spirit with the countless hours they have donated to the cause of the Games and showed that spirit when they secured a Silver Medal in 2007.

March 2011

This ”Athlete of the Month” is compiled of Firefighters from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service. They are members of the Angling Association within their service. Over the past 10 years they have competed in their respective National Fly Angling Championships at the highest level, which are held annually in different venues around the UK. Some members of the team have already competed in the 2009 games in British Columbia, where they had the unique experience of salmon fishing on the world famous Fraser River. This year, they are determined to represent their Fire Service in the Big Apple and be a part of what is expected to be the most memorable sporting event the games have ever produced. Gerry O’Brien (Club Chairman), Ronan O’Reilly (Secretary) & Terry Morrison (Treasurer) are all mindful that the games will respectfully coincide with the 10 year remembrance of 9/11 where so many emergency service personnel tragically lost their lives. Their club also had its own tragic loss, when Crew Commander “John January” died tragically 7 years ago in an unfortunate boating accident. John a former member and a keen angler is fondly remembered among the team. The Annual Angling competition is now referred to as the “John January Memorial“. As everyone is already aware, Belfast is hosting the Games in 2013 and the members of the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service have already got the wheels in motion to host a unique and memorable angling experience on some of the World’s most famous Lakes.

Through fund raising, they founded the Firefighter Sergio Villanueva Memorial Scholarship at Hofstra University which currently provides a half Scholarship for a soccer player from both the Men's and Women's program on an annual basis.

At the 2009 Games in British Columbia, the team won the Silver Medal. They expect to return and compete in the 2011 Games in New York and make a run for the Gold!

January 2011

The January "Athlete of the Month" is made up of a group of female Firefighters from Australia. The members of the "Fiery Felines" soccer club work in many different areas throughout NSW, Australia. The group was unable to field a team for the 2009 Games but have set their sights on attending the games in New York. In an effort to help support their cause, the team has conducted a number of fundraising events and has designated two charities to share in the proceeds; the Burn Unit at The Children's Hospital in Westmead and MND Free, which supports the prevention of hereditary Motor Neuron Disease. They are confident that they will achieve their goal while helping out two worthy causes. December 2010

The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service (a.k.a. the Transit Police Service), is Canada's first and only dedicated transit police force. It was established in December 2005 with the mandate to ensure safety and security on and around Metro Vancouver's complex public transportation system. Their current strength is 180 sworn police officers and nearly 70 civilian support staff for a total of 250 employees.

In early 2009, the Transit Police Pistol Team was formed in anticipation of the World Police & Fire Games being hosted locally in Vancouver, British Columbia. Members of the team both competed, and volunteered their time at the range to help administer the various pistol events. The 2009 World Police and Fire Game event was a huge success with over 10,000 competitors from over 56 countries. The privilege of representing the Transit Police at its inaugural event has created a flavor for competition ever since.

As a result, the team recently traveled to Dublin, Ohio, and participated in the 2010 Can-Am Police & Fire Games. Competing in a grueling five pistol events over 10 days, the team earned 13 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, for a combined total of 16 medals in both individual and team events.

The Transit Police Pistol Team is now looking forward to travelling to the 2011 Games in New York City to compete, meet new people, and to pay their respects to the countless emergency personnel who fell during the 9/11 attacks.

October 2010

The 2009 Games in British Columbia saw Gaelic Football make an appearance as an introductory sport. Members of the New York City Fire Department team were on hand to participate in this event. The FDNY Gaelic football team was originally sponsored by the Emerald Society and founded in 1972. Throughout its 38 years of existence, members of the team have participated in numerous competitions and tournaments throughout the world.

As with many other teams, one of their goals is to further strengthen the bond that exists between first responders throughout the world. Members of the team expressed their excitement when they first heard Gaelic Football was announced as part of the 2009 Games. It is anticipated that the number of teams and individuals that will participate in future games will increase as the sport moves back to the country of its origin.

Members of the FDNY team can also proudly say that they not only participated in the first year of the sport of Gaelic Football at the Games, but also the fact that they earned the inaugural Gold medal along the way. They have already begun to practice and are ready to defend their title at the 2011 Games in New York.
